Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy

Progesterone, Estrogen, Natural Dessicated Thyroid

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) is an alternative to the more well known, hormone replacement therapy (HRT).  BHRT and HRT are both synthetic hormones that can be taken orally, used as a suppository or applied through creams. BHRT can be used for symptoms of perimenopause, menopause, PCOS, heavy menstrual cycles and hypothyroidism.

Although also synthetic, BHRT uses hormones that are structurally identical to those made naturally within the body. In contrast, HRT hormones are structurally similar but not identical to the body’s natural hormones.

Many patients prefer the use of BHRT because of their improved safety profile compared to HRT.

The types of BHRT that naturopathic doctors can prescribe include:

  • Topical and vaginal estrogen

  • Topical and vaginal progesterone

  • Desiccated thyroid hormone

When is BHRT prescribed?

BHRT can be used to correct hormone deficiencies or support and correct hormonal imbalances. The first step to implementing BHRT is to test hormones and identify the imbalance and guide treatment and dosage.

BHRT is started at the lowest dose known to be effective and titrated up if needed based on symptoms. Hormones are retested on a yearly basis to re-assess the safety and effectiveness of treatment.

Conditions where BHRT can be effective include:

  • Perimenopause

  • Menopause

  • PCOS

  • Hypothyroidism

  • Fertility

Other HORMONE BALANCE conditions treated include:

Acne, Adrenal fatigue, Amenorrhea, Cortisol Imbalance, HPA axis dysfunction, Hyperthyroidism (Graves Disease), Hypothyroidism (Including Autoimmune Thyroiditis aka Hashimotos), Low libido, Menopause (hot flashes, vaginal dryness, sleep, mood), PCOS, PMDD, PMS, Post birth control syndrome
